Our Little Apple Orchard

When we lived in our last house, we planted a few apple trees to add to the few that already existed there. We had a very close friend/neighbor who has an amazing apple orchard on his property and he helped us to plant a few more trees in our yard. We had many apples that the older trees were producing and absolutely loved it.

I became an apple pie baker! I love to bake them and share them with family and neighbors. I make my own pie crust from scratch and used our apples to make the pies. It is so much fun and even more delicious.

So, fast forward… we have been in this house for a little over 9 months and we have planted our first set of trees. We decided to order from Stark Bro’s Nurseries online. You can read about their company history on their website. They also have great prices. Each tree you select on their website comes with an abundance of information. You can research the trees that will thrive best in your climate, they also provide information on taste, texture, bloom color, ripen/harvest times, etc. So even if you don’t necessarily know how to go about planting fruit trees, they are super helpful!!

We ordered 16…. to start. We chose the Enterprise and Jonafree apple trees. These apple trees are disease resistant. You can learn more about them by clicking on the names. We thought long and hard about where to put them and ultimately decided on the front of the house where the yard meets the hay field. We thought it would create a nice separation for the two and be a great place to pick apples!!

Mike wanted to involve the kids in planting the trees to show them how important it is to give back to the earth. And to show them how hard work will give us apples in the future. They, of course, loved the idea of planting the trees with daddy. They helped to plant each tree and cover each tree root with soil. It is such a blessing to be able to do this with them. Now to wait patiently for about 2-3 years for some yummy fresh apples!! It’s so worth the wait.

The plan is also to add another two rows over the next two years so that we eventually have about 30 apple trees!!
